Review: Massive Slavery - Global Enslavement (2010)

Review published by Legion on 2010-10-21

Massive Slavery - Global EnslavementA new face has surfaced on the Quebec metal scene, coming from up north, Rouyn-Noranda/Val d’Or; Massive Slavery kicked the door open to introduce themselves and unleash their melodic technical death metal with their debut album Global Enslavement, released last summer on the Canadian label Maple Metal Records!

For a first album, I can say that the guys from Massive Slavery have managed to produce something pretty solid and professional. Global Enslavement does not sound like your typical debut album from an underground band. The overall production is clean, precise while managing to keep everything loud and heavy! This may be a first album for them but don’t get fooled, the band members are experienced, having played in the past for such acts as Descend into Nothingness, Paroxysm and Decrepity, and they show it on this album.

One of the things that made me appreciate this album is the fact it is not linear; the songs vary throughout the album from the generalized not too fast melodic rhythm to some very brutal parts like i.e. in Pull the Plug on Modern Civilization. We are even treated to an instrumental interlude, rightfully named A Cold Interlude, which is something I definitely think is missing in modern death metal! The vocals style of Jon “The Prof” St-Pierre also surprised me with some very low growls in some of the songs (Pull the Plug on Modern Civilization, Generalized cyberphobia) which differ from his usual style and made me wonder why he did not use more of them on the album, but that’s only because I’m a sucker for low, mean and hateful growls.

If well produced melodic tech death metal is your thing and you are in need of something fresh, I would recommend you check them out right now! The guys in Massive Slavery are very active, they now have a song on the Rock Band game and will shoot their first music video for the song Humanity’s Last Hope at the end of October. Keep your eyes opened as you will probably see a lot more from them in the near future!

Favorite songs: The Denial of Man’s Regression, Pull the Plug on Modern Civilization and Generalized Cyberphobia
