Review: Autaric - Death Propaganda (2011)

Review published by Jessica Simard on 2011-07-23

Autaric - Death PropagandaAutaric is a four piece death metal band from Saskatchewan, Canada and  Death Propaganda is the formation's first full-length since their formation in 2007. For those interested in hearing earlier material, they released a four song demo in 2009.

The album starts out with a creepy intro, setting you into what you think will be the mood of the album and possibly giving you insight to what you can expect from the upcoming songs. Think again, it's a lure, although it's well made, you're in for a surprise when the first song of the album starts.

This album is nothing short of extreme, it starts heavy, stays heavy and ends heavy. Its one of the albums where the musicians aren't there to make you wish you could play like them and knock you off your feet with a retarded amount of spectacularly unlistenable and what-the-hell-is-going-on guitar riffs. It's simply a piece of work that aims at smashing your face with a sledge hammer of brutality and at that, it succeeds.

In general the album is well written, the songs flow well into each other and the production is good. It's pleasing to the ears. That said, some songs might feel like there are a lot of unnecessary repetition and it often seems like the parts were prolonged just to make the song a bit longer. If you listen to the album from start to finish you might find yourself three to four songs later without actually noticing that the songs changed because the songs are all very similar in feel and in the way they where written. They all have their really good moments though, where you'll being saying to yourself “that
was awesome.” Which makes up for the less interesting parts.

Overall the album is very good. A lot of effort was put into and you can tell. Autaric is definitely a band with the potential to do something great. I suggest that you pay attention  to the songs Scourge of the Death King and  At Winter's End. They are in my opinion the two most solid pieces on the album. I can't help but feel like this is a band you can only fully appreciate in a live context.
