While looking at the cover from Vengeful's latest album, The Omnipresent Curse (by Martin Lacroix), we notice right away the atmosphere of a place haunted by demonic creatures that seem to be waiting for us to open the cover to jump right at our faces. We can feel the coldness, the darkness of this place and one can almost hear the wind blowing… After a first glance at the cover, I was already liking it before I even pressed play… it was now time to jump into this hell.
The Omnipresent Curse starts relatively softly in the first instants of the song Forsaken before releasing all the heaviness and the brutality of Vengeful's music, who offers with this album a death metal of quality with a very good sound production. The guitars, heavy yet precise, fit perfectly with the drums and its great balance between blast beats and the moderate sections that never leaves us doubting the brutality of their music throughout the entire album. As for vocals, Marc-André Grenier offers an excellent performance with a voice that goes from your typical growl to surprising low growl reminiscent of Mortician's Will Rahmer.
For those who, like me, will be left standing with the two songs that last less than 3 minutes, Vengeful finishes this album with a big bang named Transcending (21:02). This song, the longest by far of the album, is not at all redundant or unoriginal contrary to many long songs that are there only as fillers on many other albums. Listening to Transcending is quite enjoyable due to the fact that it alternates between a succession of dark atmospheres that overlap perfectly.
At last, Vengeful's members give us a very strong album where we definitely hear the band's progress in terms of sound production. At a time when death core is becoming more and more prominent in Montreal, this death metal album, quite old school, falls easily within my top ten of the best death metal albums of 2009. This album is intended for brutal death fans that are looking for quality and originality!
