Two years ago, Superior Enlightenment unleashed its brutality upon the world with its light speed face melting blackened death metal. The band members have now returned with a new 4 song EP, Tyrants United, to show the world their own new brand of brutality.
With a total running time of only 14 minutes, this EP is a showcase of what is to come in the future for this band. A transitional passage towards what the new Superior Enlightenment will sound like: brutal industrial black metal. Do not worry, Superior Enlightenment is still brutal as one would expect from this band but instead of having some industrial samples placed here and there, you now have a thick layer of it on top of all the aggression. If I had to compare this band to another one I would say it reminds me of a kind of brutal Limbonic Art minus the symphony to which was added an extra dose of industrial sound, heaviness and speed.
One of the noticeable things on this EP is that there are more tempo variations than on the previous album, The Great Obscurantism, which was pretty much 200 km/h from start to finish. This, for me, is a good thing since it gives me time to catch my breath and appreciate what I’ve just heard before moving on to the next assault. Production wise, every instrument now sounds more electronic and digital than before therefore emphasizing the industrial tone and feel of the album.
Whether you’re familiar with Superior Enlightenment or not, if you’re into extreme metal, you should definitely give this EP a spin to learn more about this band and what they have planned for the future, I’m sure you will appreciate what’s happening on Tyrants United. Not to mention the amazing line-up, which is well known among the Quebec’s metal scene, doing all the work here with Néant on vocals (ex-Fragments of Sentience), Ekinox on guitar (Scum Sentinel, Spirit of the Forest, Magister Dixit…), Moses on bass (ex-Fragments of Sentience) and Auster a.k.a Franky Blastbeat on drums (Spirit of the Forest, Longing for Dawn…), which alone are good enough reasons for you to give them a try.
