Review: Unbeing - Unbeing (2011)

Review published by Jessica Simard on 2011-09-22

Unbeing - UnbeingI wasn't really planning on reviewing Unbeing's album (unless I was asked to) but after hearing it during work today, I changed my mind. This album is definetly worth the time I'm going to put into this review, if only to tell you how much I loved it.

After hearing it today, I have come to the conclusion that Unbeing is in my opinion the most promissing underground progressive metal band to be coming out of Quebec, and until a band proves me wrong, I would extend that to the rest of Canada also. Simply put, the album is awesome and well worth the investment.

Remember the young Unbeing, who used to play metalcore? Forget that! Right now! Although they were already good back then, this change of heart is for the best and hopefully they will stay in this direction.

So what we have here is a five piece instrumental progressive-add-all-the-styles-you-can-think-of metal band. If the reason you don't listen to progressive type music in your everyday metal playlist is because the songs become long and dull after a little while, I guarantee you this won't be the case with Unbeing's album. Each song sounds as fresh as the last and the next to come. The muscicianship of each of the band members is worth the mention weather it be Sherif Maghraby on guitar, Jean Phillipe Bedard on drums or any of the other members for that matter.

The production of the album is also nearly flawless, they are giving us a really polished realease, worthy of some of the best metal albums out there.

I suggest to all who listen to the album, please do yourselves a favor and listen to is from beginning to end. Let it sink in properly, there is always a little something fun to listen to  that comes up in the songs, just when you're about to tell yourself that maybe it's time to change the song and make you listen to the rest of it. In a time where the attention span of people in general is pretty short this is really important to be able to do with your songs and I believe Unbeing did a good job at doing this.

This album is for progressive fans. Obviously. But I'm sure anyone who enjoys good music, with a lot of little details and twists and turns can enjoy this. I really hate comparing bands with others, but if Animals as Leaders were to play a show in Montreal anytime soon, I would definetly put unbeing on the bill. I'm not saying they sound the same, because they don't, but it's comparable in many ways.

On and ending note, the only way I could see this album being better, is if was a concept album. Note that it might already be and I am just misinformed.
