With winter lurking just around the corner, my craving for black metal is slowly becoming more persistent. Sorcier des Glaces’ latest album, The Puressence of Primitive Forests which is the long awaited follow-up to 2006 Moonrise in Total Darkness, might just be what I need to get me in that cold and bleak mood. But seriously, no need to get all kvlt, cold and bleak to enjoy some black metal, even during the summer by the side of a pool with a cold beer in hand black metal can be very satisfying!
So, 5 years later, did the long running duo consisting of Sébastien Robitaille (Vocals, guitars and bass) and Luc Gaulin (Drums) managed to satisfy my craving for black metal? The answer is definitely yes! Ok, we’re not talking groundbreaking black metal here; there is nothing you’ve never heard before on The Puressence of Primitive Forests but still, everything is done in a way that makes the final result quite enjoyable throughout the entire album.
What I really liked on The Puressence of Primitive Forests is the almost continuous presence of melodies created by one of the guitar in contrast to the other which sounds heavier and rawer, thus creating a very good balance overall and adding some “color” to the music and general ambience. I also really liked the vocals done by Sébastien Robitaille. His voice, as with most of the production, has improved a lot since the previous album; it sounds more mature, more rasp and heavier, therefore amplifying the cold and dark atmosphere found on this album.
In short, what we have here is a pretty decent black metal album done by two guys who have been around in the Quebec metal scene for quite some time now and who seem to be getting better and better as time passes! If you don’t know about Sorcier des Glaces, listen to The Puressence of Primitive Forests album and if you like it, keep your eyes opened for the re-release of their 1998 debut album Snowland, which is due on Christmas day 2011.
