A giant burning moose terrorizing some neighborhood, if I had forgotten I was doing a review for a metal album, Uigg's album cover certainly reminded me. Extra points for the cover, if I were to see this in a record store, I'd definetly be intrigued and pick it up.
Uigg gives us a solid piece of modern thrash/death metal. It's agressive, fast and the songs are well enough written that we may not get bored of it. Who would of thought it possible for an album like this one to come out of the maritimes, not because people from there aren't talented or anything, it's just that we barely ever hear of anything going on over there, it's always a bit of a suprise when something actually happens.
Overall the album is much, much better than what I've heard from the guys in the past. Each instrument seems to fit in. I especially love the guitar work. At first I had problems with the production and overall sound of the album, there are many places in the album which are unflattering to the band, and this made it hard to actually listen to the songs. But when you go back and think about it, I'm actually comparing this to albums which are overproduced, and have a "fake" sound to them. It hit me pretty hard when I realized, this is actually what albums should be sounding like if bands didn't cover stuff up in gimmics to make them sound better than they actually are. The fact that their album sounds "real" is actually a good thing. It's real music, made by real people, and it's pretty brutal.
That being said, Uigg has made huge progress in terms of sound and seem to be going down the right path. I recommend this for fans of Strapping Young Lad. You might not see why right away, but give it a few listens and you'll see why I say this. It's not a wall of sound, but it definetly has the same type of energy. Also if you liked Inssurection you will probably like these guys too. Uigg is possibly the heaviest band in the maritimes, hopefully we will hear more of them in the near future.
