Review: Aeternam - Disciples of the Unseen (2009)

Review published by Legion on 2010-03-31

Aeternam - Disciples of the UnseenThe first thought that came to my mind in the first seconds of listening to Disciples of the Unseen, was that it took a lot of guts to start a death metal album with chants that seem to come right out of a Middle Eastern mosque and, on top of that, to make it sound right! That's exactly what Aeternam are doing with the intro from the first song, Ars Almadel, and the result is great, as is the beginning of the second track, Angel Horned, and its guitars with their typical Middle Eastern sound. With this album, you are in for a surprise!

The attention given to details by Aeternam throughout the album is very effective and it ensures that this album is ahead of the competition. Whether in The Coronation of Seth where they mix clean vocals and growls or the subtle, but effective use of the china cymbal in the blast beats parts of Hamunaptra. We also have to mention the song Iteru, the only non metal song of the album, with its flute, percussion and harmonic vocals sung in Arabic. The Middle Eastern influence is present throughout the album, whether it is in your face or simply used with parsimony.

This death metal album is very original! The attractive sounds of the melodic guitars, coupled to the warm voice of Achraf Loudiy (which is sometimes reminiscent of Behemoth's vocalist, Nergal) and the subtlety of the keyboards, set this album aside from the competition!

With just about 45 minutes and a great sound production, Disciples of the Unseen turns out to be a solid first album for Aeternam. We can easily imagine promising times ahead for them, even more now that they signed to Metal Blade Records, things couldn't look brighter for a career outside of the country.

Even though 2010 has just begun, I have the firm impression that Disciples of the Unseen will end up on my top 10 for this year best Canadian metal albums. The competition is on!!
