Toronto based metallers, Elegy of Suffering have recently released their debut EP, …Mercy For None. The band's line up, comprised of Dan Glover on vocals, Steve Miller on guitar and Matt Hems* on 7 strings guitar, bass and drum programming, delivers a fast paced, aggressive and crushing old school type of death metal.
From the first track to the last, Elegy of Suffering gives us tons of blast beats to bang our heads to. The guitar work is also quite good and effective with a lot of diverse and catchy riffs followed by the bass line which is thankfully very audible and makes the songs heavier. The drum programming is also well done but obviously it would have been nice to have a real drummer blasting it all away. Dan Glover on vocals also does a great job with his low gurgling-type growls and high pitched shrieks from which you will feel all the hatred flowing.
Mix all the above elements together and you get songs like Wasteland (The Fallout's Desolation), which is definitely my favorite on the EP. This song has everything you want from death metal, brutality, speed, precision and even a Suffocation-like slower middle part which is only the interlude before the devastation kicks back in! If you dig this song, you will certainly enjoy the other four tracks that are also full of intensity and hate.
Overall, Elegy of Suffering brings us a very decent first effort with this death metal album. Definitely worth adding as your friend on MySpace so you can keep your eyes on the guys and see what will happen in the future! The guys are currently looking for a drummer and if all goes well, we may hope for another album in a not so distant future!
Favorite songs: Wasteland (The Fallout's Desolation) and The Gods Who speak Through the Fire
*Matt Hems, aka Matt Hades, is also the host of the Canadian metal radio show The Great Black North
